This is a no-prep measurement lab to practice the scientific inquiry (scientific method) process. The only materials needed is a metric tape measure and a Chromebook or laptop.

I use the lab at the beginning of the year with my 8th grade students to practice metric measurement, creating a hypothesis, collecting and analyzing data, and writing a conclusion. This lab has self-creating graphs build into the Google Sheets so that students can focus on the big picture. It is also extremely easy to grade when assigned through a learning Management System (LMS) such as Google Classroom.

  • The students begin by opening the Google Slides to learn about the lab and write their hypothesis. There are helpful notes in the speaker notes of the Google Slides. These are great for distance learners but can be deleted for in-class use.

  • The students are then prompted to open the provided Google Sheets to input their measurement data. If the data in inputted correctly, the graph will create itself.

  • The students then copy and paste they data tables and graphs into the lab.

  • Finally the student writes a conclusion based upon the class data.
