Over the past 23 years, I’ve had the privilege of teaching students from ages 6 to 18 in public schools. I’ve worked with children at all academic levels, including those who are gifted, and I’ve witnessed firsthand how education has evolved—or in some cases, devolved. Academic standards have shifted, often moving further away from best practices that support children’s academic, social, and emotional development.
In the past year, I stepped away from traditional public school teaching and began working with homeschool families. I started by teaching enrichment classes, and that’s when I met some of the most dedicated, inspiring parents I’ve ever encountered. These parents were determined to give their children a well-rounded education, tailoring their learning experiences in ways that worked best for their families.
However, I also saw the challenges these parents faced. Many shared their stories in my classes or through Facebook homeschooling groups I joined. I discovered that, while these parents were committed to giving their children the best education possible, many didn’t know where to start. Questions like “What should I teach my 6-year-old?” or “How do I balance academics with social and emotional growth?” came up over and over again.
That’s when I realized I could help.
With 23 years of experience in education and two Master’s degrees, I had a wealth of knowledge about academic and developmental milestones, best practices, and educational philosophies. I knew I could provide parents with the guidance they were looking for. That’s why I wrote The Empowered Homeschool: A Complete Guide for Ages 3-17.
.
This guide is for families who are new to homeschooling and unsure where to begin. It merges research-based milestones and best practices with practical advice for creating a well-rounded educational experience. I’ve included year-by-year academic and social/emotional milestones, practical tips, and activities to help parents feel confident in their homeschooling journey.
What makes this book special is that it’s not just about the “what” of homeschooling—it’s about the “why” and the “how.” I want parents to understand their child’s developmental stages, so they’re not just checking boxes but creating an environment where their children thrive. And because I believe in empowering parents, I included all of my research for those who want to dive deeper.
This book isn’t a one-size-fits-all curriculum. It’s a starting point—a foundation for parents to build upon as they tailor their approach to their unique family. My goal is to take away the overwhelm and replace it with clarity and confidence.
To all the homeschooling families out there, whether you’re just starting or looking for fresh ideas, know that you’re not alone in this journey. You have the dedication and love for your children, and with the right resources, you’ll be able to create something truly amazing.
I’m excited to share The Empowered Homeschool with you, not just as a teacher, but as someone who deeply admires the courage and commitment of homeschool parents. Let’s make this journey one of growth, learning, and connection—for you and your child.
